Tesla Paint Shop PNG Requirements: Size, Folder, and Export Checklist

What the PNG is actually for

A Paint Shop PNG is not a production file for a real vehicle wrap. It is a digital image used by the vehicle software to change the appearance of the car model shown on the in-car display. That difference matters because the file has to satisfy software expectations rather than print-shop requirements. Sharpness, alignment, transparent areas, file naming, and folder placement are more important than print resolution or vinyl material simulation. The safest mental model is to treat the file as a screen skin: it needs to be easy for the vehicle to discover and predictable for the display renderer to map onto the model.

Recommended export checklist

Before moving a design to a USB drive, review four basics. First, export a PNG rather than a JPEG so hard edges, transparent areas, and flat colors remain clean. Second, keep the image dimensions and layout produced by the editor; resizing after export can shift the mapping. Third, use simple filenames with letters, numbers, dashes, or underscores. Fourth, avoid extremely large files. A large PNG might work on a desktop browser but still fail or feel slow when the vehicle scans the USB drive. If you are troubleshooting, export a simple solid-color test file first, then add complexity once you know the workflow is recognized.

USB folder structure

Most Paint Shop workflows expect a specific folder structure on a USB drive, commonly a folder named Wraps at the root of the drive. Folder names can be case sensitive depending on the vehicle software path, so avoid creative variations such as wraps, Wrap, TeslaWraps, or PaintShop unless your vehicle instructions explicitly use them. Put the exported PNG directly inside the expected folder. Do not bury it inside a zip archive, a nested project folder, or a folder created by your operating system. If the vehicle does not find the file, the folder path is one of the first things to check.

USB formatting and simple filenames

A USB drive formatted as exFAT or FAT32 is usually the least surprising choice for vehicle compatibility. Avoid NTFS unless your specific vehicle software documents support for it. Filenames should stay boring: vehicle_image.png, model3-skin.png, or blue-digital-skin.png are easier to scan and debug than names with emoji, punctuation, long spaces, or nonstandard symbols. If you make multiple variations, keep a small set on the drive while testing. Too many files can make it harder to identify which one the vehicle has loaded.

Common mistakes that break the workflow

The most common issue is editing the exported image in another app and accidentally changing its dimensions or background transparency. The next most common issue is copying the PNG to the wrong folder level. Another frequent problem is exporting a design that looks good on a bright desktop monitor but becomes too dark or too saturated on the vehicle display. For better results, use medium contrast, avoid tiny text, and preview your design at smaller sizes before exporting. A digital skin should read clearly from a quick glance, not only when zoomed in.

A safe testing routine

When trying a new vehicle template or a new USB drive, create a simple test design first: one base color, one obvious diagonal stripe, and no custom photos. Export that PNG, place it in the expected folder, and confirm the vehicle recognizes it. Once the basic path works, test your real design. This two-step process saves time because it separates file-transfer problems from design problems. If the simple file works but the complex file does not, focus on file size, transparency, naming, and exported dimensions.
