How to Use TeslaPaintShop Safely
A practical workflow for choosing a template, designing a digital vehicle skin, exporting a PNG, and checking the current instructions in your own vehicle before transfer.
1. Confirm the feature on your vehicle
Before designing, open the relevant vehicle settings or Toybox area and confirm that Paint Shop or Colorizer is available. Tesla can change availability, naming, supported vehicles, and import steps by market and software release, so the instructions shown by your own car are the primary reference.
2. Choose the closest visual template
Select the template that best matches the vehicle model shown on your screen. A template is a visual approximation and does not identify your vehicle automatically.
- Base color: Start with a clear base color that reads well on the vehicle display. Dark colors feel dramatic, while bright colors make uploaded graphics easier to see.
- Custom graphics: Use DIY Mode for personal artwork, photos, simple shapes, or pattern overlays. Keep important details large enough to remain visible on the in-car screen.
Test first: Use a simple color and one obvious stripe to check alignment before creating a complex design.
3. Design and export without resizing
Use the flat panel map and 3D preview to adjust colors, patterns, opacity, placement, and custom artwork. The 3D scene is for comparison and may not reproduce the exact brightness or mapping of the in-car display. Export the PNG at the template canvas dimensions and avoid cropping, resizing, or recompressing it before testing.
4. Follow the current vehicle instructions
If your vehicle supports importing artwork, follow the storage format, folder path, filename, and import steps displayed by the current vehicle software or official owner documentation. Do not assume one fixed USB folder or menu path applies to every model, region, or software version.
5. Preview at display size before exporting
A design that looks impressive on a desktop monitor can become too busy on the vehicle display. Before you export, zoom out mentally: can you still recognize the main color, stripe, logo, or pattern in one glance? Avoid tiny text, thin outlines, and photo collages with many small subjects. The strongest Paint Shop skins use clear hierarchy: one base color, one major accent, and only a few supporting details.
6. Keep a known-good test file
After you successfully load one PNG in the car, keep that file as a troubleshooting reference. If a later design fails to appear, test the known-good PNG again. If the known-good file works, the new design likely has a naming, size, transparency, or export issue. If the known-good file also fails, check the USB drive, folder location, or vehicle scan state first.
7. Understand what changes and what does not
Paint Shop changes the vehicle appearance shown by the car software. It does not modify the real exterior paint, apply a vinyl film, affect warranty-covered hardware, or change the way the vehicle drives. Treat the exported PNG as a personal display skin for the in-car interface. That clear expectation helps you design better files and avoids confusing the tool with real-world wrap production.
Troubleshooting tip
Cybertruck designs usually benefit from large shapes and strong contrast because the screen model has broad angular surfaces. Model 3 and Model Y designs often look cleaner with fewer small details. Test your design at a small size before exporting.
